Anatomy of the Breasts

Breast surgery is a form of surgery performed on the breast. There are multiple types of breast surgeries, depending on the patient need, medical history and existing health conditions.
Some are performed for medical reasons such as cancer, others for cosmetic reasons.
Anatomy of Breast
Breasts, also known as mammary glands, are a pair of glandular organs that produce milk in response to the hormone changes of childbirth. They are mainly made up of fatty tissue and are supported by ligaments and large muscles.

Each breast has 15-20 lobes with a number of lobules and ducts supportive tissue (see diagram). Each lobule has about 30 major ducts that open onto the nipple. The darker area of skin around the nipple is called the areola. At the edge of the areola there are large glands that produce fluid to lubricate the nipple.

In each armpit, there are about 20-30 lymph nodes (glands) that drain fluid from the breast. These form part of the lymphatic system that helps the body to fight infection.

Breast - Benign

A benign breast condition refers to a lump, cyst, or nipple discharge (fluid) of the female or male breast that is not cancerous. Other common conditions are breast calcification, mastitis & hyperplasia.

Below are some common Benign Breast Disorders

  1. Breast Pain
    • Cyclical - Due to Hormone Stimulation
    • Non - Cyclical - Due to Infection (mastitis), Mondor's disease
  2. Nipple Discharge
    • Milk during breast feeding
    • Bloody / Clear / Purulent from duct disorders

Breast - Malignant

Mammography
When the cells in the breast tissue grow and divide out of control, it creates a mass of tissue called a tumor. When the tumor is caused due to abnormal cells it is called malignant (cancerous). These abnormal cells can spread to other parts of the body infecting them as well.

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer affecting women in India. If detected early, breast cancer can be treated well with minimal morbidity to the patient.

Dr. Sanjitha Shampur will guide you appropriately at all stages of your fight against Breast Cancer.

Frequently Asked Questions

A benign breast lump is a non-cancerous growth, such as a cyst or fibroadenoma, that typically doesn’t pose a threat to health but may need monitoring or removal if it causes discomfort.

Not all breast lumps are cancerous, but any new lump should be checked by a doctor. Mammograms, ultrasounds, and biopsies are used to determine if the lump is malignant.

Benign lumps may not require treatment, but if they cause pain or concern, they may be surgically removed. Malignant lumps require cancer treatment, which can include surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation.

Yes, breast lump surgery is generally safe, with a low risk of complications. Your surgeon will discuss the procedure and risks with you.

Whether chemotherapy or radiation is needed depends on the type of cancer and how far it has spread. Your oncologist will guide you through the treatment options.

Recovery from breast lump surgery can take 1-2 weeks, depending on the complexity of the surgery and whether it is benign or malignant.

Dr.Sanjita is very kind and an energy booster, I would say. She always give a positive energy and we don't even feel like we are sick, and responds immediately even for messages. I have done hemorrhoid surgery recently. I was totally scared to go to a doctor and do the surgery. But from the first consultation itself I got a very good confidence from the way doctor treated me and explained the procedure. I would really recommend her. Thank you Doctor 🙏
